No shared clock ≠ no shared world
Fleet gates (ruled)
| Gate | Ruling | Status |
|---|---|---|
| What does “observer / conscious system” mean? | Mainline usage: a physical system that keeps records or models (sensor→memory→estimate→control is enough). Phenomenal consciousness “constructing the world” is not ontology, matching index 2.2 and 2.17. | standing · discipline negative · consciousness-as-ontology |
| How far does “no commonly shared objective reality” reach? | Deny only: (1) a global shared simultaneity clock / absolute present; (2) a single non-contextual global value table for all observables. Do not deny shared dynamical laws, spacetime interval and causal order, proper time along a worldline, or redundantly recordable stable facts. A reading that also denies shared laws/invariants is NO-GO for that branch. | standing · scope |
Legend
standing textbook-stable; working mainline-worthy work claim; speculative optional bridge; negative refused.
1. Original conjecture (before narrowing)
- Time may be constructed by an observer inside a local coordinate system, not a shared global axis.
- If everything is structure and information, “the objective world” may be a mistaken approximation.
- Even granting locality, how large is a local patch? If every part influences every other, there may be no observer-independent objective world—only one unified system.
- Relativity’s non-shared time axis then looks natural: the physical world ≈ roughly compatible world-representations inferred by different conscious systems.
2. Steelman chain (what survives)
standing A · No global simultaneity clock
Special/general relativity abolish absolute simultaneity. This is textbook physics, not a consciousness thesis.
standing B · Cross-observer invariants remain
Frames still agree exactly on interval, causal order, proper time along a given worldline, and reunion outcomes. Disagreements follow exact transformation laws.
working C · Objectivity as emergent redundancy
Reread “objective” as structure that is invariant across recording systems and redundantly imprinted, not as a God-table of absolute simultaneous facts. Quantum Darwinism, relational stable facts, and contextuality (no global non-contextual value table) support degree-valued objectivity as an output.
working D · Observer = record/model system
Nail “observer” to a physical recording chain, not first-person experience—compatible with index 2.2.
speculative E · Time-from-correlation bridges
Page–Wootters-style constructions may illuminate local clocks; they do not by themselves erase a shared world.
speculative F · Holism metaphor only
“Parts and whole mutually specify” may be kept as relational metaphor; “part contains whole” collides with monogamy and no-cloning.
3. Stress tests (where the strong reading fails)
- Relativity is the wrong witness. “No shared time coordinate ⇒ no shared world” runs backwards.
- “Science’s basic assumption is wrong” is a strawman. Better: some approximations were mistaken for the fundamental level.
- Consciousness-as-constructor does not earn its keep against physical recording systems; it trips index guards.
- “Every part influences every other” confuses correlation with influence; light cones / no-signaling still bind.
- “Roughly compatible representations” need a mechanism; explaining agreement usually reimports shared structure.
- Collective subconscious “rendering” is a separate social-construction claim, not absorbed here.
4. Map to public frameworks
| Framework | Alignment | Break |
|---|---|---|
| Relativity | No absolute simultaneity; shared interval/causal order | Cannot prove “no objective world” |
| Relational QM / QBism-adjacent | Facts relative to recording systems | Not solipsism; not consciousness ontology |
| Decoherent histories / quantum Darwinism | Redundant records explain apparent objectivity | Does not automatically yield consciousness |
| Wheeler it-from-bit | Records make differences definite | Encoding ≠ ontology |
| Strong holism slogans | Relational metaphor | Part-contains-whole; faster-than-light influence |
5. Three-model accents
- Opus 4.6: NARROW-GO; softest consciousness wording in the steelman; still fences “science is fundamentally wrong,” proper-time denial, and entanglement-defeats-locality.
- Opus 5.5: NARROW-GO; sharpest relativity correction; standing/working/speculative grades; posed the two gates the fleet now rules.
- Fable 5.1: NARROW-GO; index-native; consciousness-as-ontology = NO-GO; objectivity = emergent redundant records.
Agreement: all three NARROW-GO; none accept the unbounded spoken claim.
6. Claim boundary for the mainline
standing · in
No global simultaneity clock; cross-observer invariants remain; observer = record/model system.
working · in
Objectivity ≈ invariants + redundant records; contextuality supports “no global non-contextual value table.”
speculative · optional
Time-from-correlation; holism-as-metaphor.
negative · out
- Consciousness constructs the world / consciousness-as-ontology
- “Science’s basic assumption is fundamentally wrong” as slogan
- “No objective reality” that also denies shared laws/invariants
- Entanglement ⇒ nonlocal influence that erases light-cone discipline
- Literal part-contains-whole holism
7. What would force a rewrite
- If “objectivity = redundant records” explains less than absolute simultaneity talk on a publicly checkable point, demote the working clause.
- If phenomenal consciousness is shown indispensable as a primitive for stable facts, reopen Gate A (current ruling says no).
- If denying shared invariants still preserves relativity and quantum-record successes, reopen the NO-GO branch of Gate B.
